Summer Tire Season is Approaching – Are Your Tires Ready?

Last Updated: 09.03.2026

As spring arrives, it's time to pay attention to summer tires. Many people replace their tires out of routine, but have you checked the condition and age of your tires? Safe driving requires tires that are in good shape, meet recommendations, and comply with legal requirements.

Tire Age

The recommended maximum lifespan of a tire is 10 years, with a suggested usage period of 6 years. The total age is calculated from the manufacturing date, which is marked on the tire’s sidewall as a four-digit code next to the DOT marking. The usage period begins when the tire is first put into service.

Tire wear and aging depend on various factors, including driving style, storage conditions, and mileage. According to international recommendations, tires should be replaced no later than six years after first use, even if the tread still appears to be in good condition.

Check the Tread Depth

In addition to the age of your tires, be sure to check their overall condition. The legal minimum tread depth for summer tires is 1.6 mm in the main grooves, which are the wide grooves located in the central area of the tread, covering approximately three-quarters of its width. It is strictly prohibited to manually modify or deepen the tread on a passenger car tire.

Weather conditions also play a role in tread depth safety recommendations. When driving in wet conditions, a tread depth of at least 4.0 mm is recommended to improve grip and reduce the risk of hydroplaning. If your tires do not meet this recommendation, it may be time to replace them and apply extra caution when driving in rainy conditions.

Do Your Tires or Rims Need an Upgrade?

If your tires or rims need replacement, explore Copart’s tire selection at renkaat.copart.fi. We promote tire circular economy by offering an affordable and environmentally friendly alternative to new tires.

Our selection includes tires and rims in various conditions to suit different needs. In most cases, tires are sold as sets along with rims, but we also occasionally offer individual tires or rims separately.

In some sets, either the tires or the rims may require repair/replacement. That’s why we recommend carefully reviewing the condition report, photos, and additional details to identify any necessary updates. Many of our tire sets are roadworthy and ready for new journeys. By utilizing our condition ratings and search filters, you can easily find the perfect set for your needs.

Where Do Our Tires Come From?

Most of the tires we sell come from second sets of wheels from salvaged vehicles, meaning they were not in use on the vehicle at the time of the accident. If the vehicle was not involved in an accident, the tires are simply used. Additionally, our selection includes second sets from decommissioned fleets or tires, rims, and sets that have been replaced due to other types of damage.
